In a game I thought the Titans might lose, Tennessee’s defense contained Adrian Peterson, rattled Gus Frerotte, and led the team to its fourth straight victory.
As every Titans fan knows by now, this franchise has never open the season with a 4-record. It’s time to shout what the rest of the league is starting to recognize: Tennessee is one of the best teams in the NFL and its defense is championship-caliber.
Story of the Game: Titans D contain the Vikings
Adrian Peterson ran well against the Titans and scored two touchdowns, but the Titans defense did not allow him to be the difference-maker in the game.
Gus Frerotte passed for 266 yards; however, Tennessee made plays against him when it had to, especially in the fourth quarter. Nick Harper had his first interception against Frerotte late in the fourth quarter and thwarted the Vikings attempt at a comeback.
Kudos to the Titans defense. You guys have played strong.
The Other Story of the Game: Chris Johnson
Johnson scored two rushing touchdowns on Sunday, using his speed and quickness to get into the end zone.
I still would like to see the Titans find creative ways to get Johnson involved in the offense. In the last two games, Tennessee’s offense has stalled in the third quarter. Offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger should commit to getting Johnson the ball 25 times a game. I think Johnson can handle it.
Kerry Collins
Collins performed well as the Titans game manager: no touchdown passes, and no interceptions. The team is in capable hands. Collins will avoid the big mistake, make good decisions and smart throws.
Nevertheless, aside from being 35 years old, Collins is not the long term answer at QB for the Titans. Vince Young still has upside, and I look forward to VY getting back on the field. However, Young might not see the field until 2009 if Collins stays healthy.
Next Week: Baltimore Ravens
The Titans face another tough opponent as they prepare to play at Baltimore. I expect a low-scoring, turnover-filled contest. As long as the Titans make fewer mistakes than the Ravens, I believe the Titans will achieve a 5-0 record.
