I am a Titans fan because I was a fan of the Houston Oilers. As a Texan, I wish the team had never left the Lone Star State.
I became an Oilers fan during the Luv Ya Blue era of the late 1970s. Bum Phillips. Earl Campbell. Elvin Bethea. Robert Brazile. Mike Renfro. These were the men who inspired passion in the Astrodome and in yours truly.
Three decades later, there is title talk in Nashville and among Titans fans everywhere. It’s too bad the Titans don’t have a fight song.
As this article states, simply replacing “Tennessee Titans” (or, “Miami Dolphins”) into the lyrics of “Houston Oilers#1,” won’t work. It would almost be sacrilegious to do it.
In honor of Lee Offman’s tribute to the Houston Oilers, here is a YouTube clip of the greatest of all professional football fight songs, “Houston Oilers #1”
Look out football, here we come,
Houston Oilers, number one.
Houston has the Oilers, the greatest football team.
We take the ball from goal to goal like no one’s ever seen.
We’re in the air, we’re on the ground … always in control
And when you say the Oilers, you’re talking Super Bowl.
‘Cause we’re the Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Number One.
Yes, we’re the Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Number One.
We’ve got the offense.
We’ve got the defense.
We give the other team no hope. ‘Cause we’re the Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers,
You know we’re gonna hold the rope.
Yes, we’re the Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Number One.
Yes, we’re the Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Number One.
‘Cause we’re the Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Number One.
Five – Seven – Eight, We’re the best from the Lone Star State!
Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Number One.
