When my beloved Titans become an elite team in the next few years, I hope they grow up to be like the San Diego Chargers.
Philip Rivers (otherwise known as “The Truth”… I’ve been a fan of Rivers since his days at NC State) gashed the Titans defense with long passes all Christmas Night and threw two touchdown passes. San Diego ran through Tennessee for 166 yards and four touchdowns.
The Chargers defense allowed Chris Johnson to rush for 142 yards, but they frustrated Vince Young, who had his worst game of the season. VY threw two picks and fumbled on a scramble with the Titans down 14-3 in the second quarter.
I was really disappointed with Mike Heimerdinger’s playcalling on the first drive of the third quarter. Down 21-10. Heimerdinger called a draw play on third and three. Johnson gained two yards. San Diego responded with an 85-yard touchdown drive to put the game out of reach.
As we know, the Titans do not have the playmakers to win a shootout with any team, and the defense could not slow down the Chargers attack. Nick Harper left the game with an arm injury, but since Jeff Fisher chose to place waiver wire sensation Rod Hood on the inactive list., rookies Jason McCourty and Ryan Mouton were left to help Cortland Finnegan and company contain Antonio Gates, Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd.
All that’s left for the Titans is to help Chris Johnson obtain a personal goal of rushing for 2000 yards. I’ve watched Oilers and Titans players obtain personal milestones for 32 seasons. I’m excited when the Titans make the playoffs and play for a chance to win a Lombardi Trophy. If Johnson rushes for 10,000 yards over the next five seasons and Tennessee doesn’t play in a Super Bowl, I’ll be very disappointed. That being said, I wish CJ and the Titans luck in Seattle.
