“If we’re ever gonna be as one
We’d better make some changes and fast
And this time make it last”
Synopsis
Art is not only a reflection of the world; it’s a reflection of the artist. Ralph wrote “Competition” and it provides a glimpse of what was on his mind in 1988.
The song begins with a rare vocal by Mike, who sets the tone by singing “I keep dreamin’ that one day the whole world will be together / Will be together as one”. “Competition” is a call for peace and harmony in a hostile world.
All vocals are sung by “the quartet” – NE’s 1986-87 lineup.
Commentary
“Competition” is “life in a singing group” summarized in one word.
Despite the song’s wide-reaching theme of good will towards humankind, I wondered if:
- the quartet was singing to themselves
- the quartet was singing to Johnny
- Ralph write this song to himself
New Edition decided to enter their adult phase by adding Johnny to the group. Would it work? Would there be tension? Would the group break up if Heart Break flopped?
Also, NE (and its fans) did not want to have another member leave the group. Of course, everything worked out, but anything could have happened at this critical point in the group’s history.
Now, of course, they really could be singing about world peace.
