One More Day

“Look in my heart
And I won’t tell you no lie
Just one more day
And loving me will be fine”

This beautiful song begins with Spanish-style guitars and Ralph whispering his plea for a chance to make things right (the CD single omits this introduction).

Jam and Lewis construct a mid-tempo song carried Ricky’s vocal, which displays a vulnerability that works perfectly with the confessional lyrics.

Ralph’s backup vocals work well with Ricky’s voice (we hear this combination again in “I’m Still In Love With You”) and his whispered commentary adds counterpoint to the song.

During the history of NE, Ricky was outshined by Ralph and Bobby, then by Ralph and Johnny. He had chances to briefly display his vocal ability on NE’s earlier albums, but was never given the chance to be the primary lead vocalist in any song.

After thirteen years of recording, and after serving as Bell Biv DeVoe’s vocalist, Ricky became a stylist who could hold his own with Ralph, Johnny and Bobby. “One More Day” was his opportunity to carry an entire song on a NE album.

“One More Day” is pop perfection and Ricky Bell’s shining moment in New Edition. Jam and Lewis wrote a great song and chose the right vocalist to sing it. Fans will remember this song as one of the group’s triumphs.
