Something About You

“Oh, no other love’s affected me before
Girl you change the rules but I come back for more
I’m a player in this game I’ll never win
This addictive love’s about to do me in”

In the early 1990s, producer Jimmy “Jam” Harris was interviewed by Jeff Lorez for the (excellent) British magazine Blues and Soul for a three-part series on the music of Flyte Tyme. Jam explained why he enjoyed working with Ralph Tresvant. “He’s willing to try anything. He’s fearless and that’s good because when you’re trying to get ideas across the last thing you want is someone saying, ‘Oh, I don’t think I can sing that!’” This might explain why Ralph was chosen to sing lead vocals when Jam and Terry Lewis conjured a country-western, funk, folk meets NE joint.

“Something About You” is the most eclectic song ever done by NE. Yet another great song which wasn’t promoted as a single (a remixed version appears along with the CD single for “One More Day”), it jump starts the second half of Home Again.

The song gives new life to the long-forgotten Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians by sampling the group’s hit, “What I Am”, and what better way to illustrate a song about obsessive love than by using a repetitive sample? This well-written, well-crafted song is an interesting listen.

Bobby sounds great as he sings background vocals and harmonizes with Ralph.
