Who Do You Trust

“If you stay
I’ll just try to make you aware
I’ll be gone
If it don’t get no better”

If you’ve read my other reviews, you know that sometimes I read into the lyrics of certain songs. In the case of “Who Do You Trust”, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Bobby is the primary vocalist.

One of the things I like most about Bobby is his attitude. After listening to his music and observing the course of his career, I’ve concluded that Bobby’s message to the world is this:

This Is Who I Am. Take Me or Leave Me.

“Who Do You Trust” is a mid-tempo song (it’s meant to be heard – too fast for a slow dance and too slow for a workout) about risk, assertiveness, uncertainty and faith. Several of Bobby’s solo hits touch on the same themes:

  • “My Prerogative”
  • “On Our Own”
  • “Two Can Play That Game”

“It’s my life, I can’t waste the time
I’ve made my decision, so let’s lay it on the line”

What better words to express Bobby’s desire to go it alone in pursuit of stardom?

The song features Bobby and Ralph singing in tandem. I think they sound great as a pair (listen to “Something About You” on Home Again for another example). It’s too bad we couldn’t have heard more of this combination.
